into the future

Three years ago today, I was summoned unexpectedly from my flat above the internet cafe by my Irish friend Robby, the kayaking instructor. He had decided that he was taking me out on the water, because we both had the day off and he had free use of his company's equipment. We spent a lovely day on the sparkling blue water under the clear blue sky off the coast of the Abel Tasman park. We paddled around Split Apple rock, alongside sandy beaches and green wilderness. I asked what kind of bird we were seeing on the rocks- it was a shag. I recited the applicable poem. When we got back to the shore, Robby's boss was nearby, and they took the opportunity to test him for some sort of recertification. So I sat wrapped in a towel on a bench as the sun sat low in the sky, and watched as Robby paddled back out into the water and demonstrated rolls and other such kayaking techniques.

My job at that time was far worse than the one I have now- standing beside a conveyer belt for 8 hours a day, sometimes 6 days a week, arranging apples in crates. I really hated it after a short time. My back hurt and my hands got very cold and chapped. But every day I got to ride my bike to the shed, past apple orchards and fields with horses. My bike was old and rusty and the brakes barely worked, but that was OK because it cost me NZ$30 and Motueka has no hills. I spent my days off mostly wandering the coastline near the tiny town, the evenings with other temporary residents, drinking beers.
