When I was in Drivers' Ed, one of the questions that we were asked was "What should you do if you encounter a mattress in the road?" I thought that was a strange question at the time, and it's clearly stuck with me for about 12 years now. (The answer, for what it's worth, was "slow down and drive over it".) Of all the possible things that you could encounter in the middle of the road, a mattress seemed pretty low on the list of possibilities.
And yet . . . today, there was a mattress in the road. There was hardly anyone driving near me, so we were all able to move around it without creating further problems. But, I admit, as I was approaching, I did consider slowing down and driving over it. After all, that's what you're supposed to do?
