Death toll in the fishtank since my parents left for their vacation:
6, with a possible 7th as yet unfound.
I think I'm a character in some aquatic Agatha Christie novel.
*shouldn't find that even remotely funny, but somehow the word 'fistrated' is just the thing to make me giggle like a moron*
yes it is, and the thought of an "aquatic Agatha Christie novel" makes me giggle too!
are you overfeeding them? if you're unsure, it's ok to skip feedings. does the water look cloudy? have you or your parents moved the tank or added water to the tank recently? did you change the immediate environment - lower the thermostat, open the blinds, etc? is there a ph test kit you can use?
i'm feeding them the amount that my dad told me to give them- a little less each time i remove a fresh body. but perhaps i will skip tomorrow morning just to be safe. the water looks the same as ever, the tank is in the same place, and i have not added water for fear of doing it wrong. haven't touched the thermostat or the blinds or changed anything else about the room. and there's a ph kit, but i have never used it and don't want to accidentally make anything worse by misreading or overcompensating or something like that.
basically, all i've done is turn the light on and off, feed them, and scoop out little fishy bodies. sigh.
sounds like you haven't done anything wrong - um, I hate to sound dumb, but is the filter working? mine shuts off sometimes (obviously, I need a new one) and because it's fairly quiet, I don't always notice right away. also, check and make sure the air pump is going, too. um, and if there's a heater, check that.
I'm not an expert, just a very experienced amateur, and I can understand the panic when things go so horribly wrong, especially when it's someone else's fish!
